Small Town Mayberry Endorses Obama

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

First Colin Powell, and now this: Sheriff Andy Taylor endorses Obama. Who next — Santa Claus? Norman Rockwell? The Easter Bunny?

Only days after VP candidate Sarah Palin insinuated that people in small towns are the only “real” Americans, Mayberry, the most famous small town of all, turns up in the Obama camp.

This begs the question: What will McCain’s responsive attack ad be? Sheriff Taylor, the terrorist? Aunt Bea, the radical Muslim? Barney Fife: born in a foreign tribe to a green and purple father?

Regardless of politics, I thought it was a delight to see Opie and Andy with their fishing poles again.

Thousands Rally in St. Louis and Baghdad

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

Obama in St. LouisOn Saturday, 100,000 showed up to hear Barack Obama give a stump speech under the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Mo.

As far as I can tell, there was no band playing, and no free beer. Just that many people in a Red State (Missouri went to Bush43 twice) wanted to come outside on a gorgeous autumn day and see and hear “that one.”

That one: you know, the one who says he’s going to give 95% of Americans a tax cut; not the erratic, out-of-touch one who tries to pass off Joe the Plumber — or any other contractor who clears a quarter million dollars profit per year — as middle-class.

After what may have been the largest ever political rally on American soil, Obama went across the state to address a rally of 75,000 people in Kansas City.

Meanwhile, there were other rallies going on Saturday…

Baghdad RallyIn Iraq, an estimated 50,000 supporters of the Iraqi Shia cleric Moqtada al Sadr peacefully marched through the streets of Baghdad to protest a draft security pact that would extend the American military presence in Iraq.

OK, like, I really think they’re ready for us to leave. Any day. Take a hint.

Just in case the Pentagon is still confused if “leave” means “leave,” an aide read a statement from al Sadr:

“I am with every Sunni, Shiite or Christian who is opposed to the agreement … and I reject, condemn and renounce the presence of occupying forces and bases on our beloved land.”

And the crowd went wild.

Mind you, this protest was not held by a few radical insurgents. Look at that crowd, waving their own Iraqi flag, almost as if they were exercising the right of their people to peaceably assemble and to petition their government for a redress of grievances. They almost look like embittered patriots who want the troops of an occupying empire to leave their land. This almost begs the question: does anybody in Washington D.C. remember what happened in 1776?

John McCain Gets BarackRoll’d

Friday, October 10th, 2008

McCain’s campaign is in freefall, but at least his staff finally got rid of that lime green background they like to stick behind him. Not sure the new Barcack Roll background will reverse the electoral slide, though.

Genetics or Environment: Why Rich White Men Steal

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

U.S. Senate Bailout MongersJust because the old white crooks in Congress couldn’t pull off a heist on Monday doesn’t mean they won’t try, try, try again.

On Monday, a lot of House Republicans wouldn’t vote in favor of the Wall Street Bailout plan. Their reasons? Because, they said, the plan steals $700 billion from the poor tax payers that will or will not reelect them, and gives that money to the rich.

Now, in an effort to bring the reluctant Republicans along, the Senate has rewritten the bill and “sweetened” it by adding another $150 billion dollars to the amount that would be taken from tax payers. This new $850 Billion Bailout Plan has now passed the Senate, and will be sent to the House for another vote on Friday.

What makes the Senate think that House Republicans who thought the $700 Billion Bailout was too large a crime will all of a sudden vote for an even larger $850 Billion Bailout? I haven’t the foggiest.

One reason may be that they have quit calling it the Wall Street Bailout and are now calling it the Economic Rescue Bill. Word is by the time it comes to a House vote, it will be changed again to the Rescue America From Osama bin Laden Or You’re Against Us Act.

Still, others are favoring simply calling it the Save Ferris Bueller Act, hoping those too young to remember Ferris are also too young to find similarities with the great Savings and Loan Bailout.

In any case, another burglary is in progress, and I’m not being racist here…just stating facts…it’s a bunch of rich white guys this time, too. So, what makes rich white men steal?

Bill Maher may have the answer. It’s worth watching for a thoughtful laugh.
