One thing is true, with knowledge comes responsibility to spread that knowledge to others to awaken the masses, but you have some people that wish to stay un-knowledgable, so that they don't have to be responsible. What sadness it is that they don't even care about the future of the off springs future to be responsible enough now, thus leaving them in an ill fated state of illusioness content. Creating a false enemy works because it evokes the instinctual fight or flight syndrome. The brain simply cannot resist becoming aroused when confronted with a possible enemy. The two main types of false enemies are false internal opponents, such as negative campaigning such as McCarthyism, and false external opponents, such as communism and the second Iraq war. While communism and Iraq were true problems, both were trumped up enormously to serve the role of a false enemy. False enemies are also known as scapegoats. They can also be used to divert the public’s attention from more important issues. Name-calling is one technique used to create a false enemy, but the biggest is fallacious arguments, better known as lies. “Next the statesmen will invent cheap lies, putting the blame upon the nation that is attacked, and every man will be glad of those conscience-soothing falsities, and will diligently study them, and refuse to examine any refutations of them; and thus he will by and by convince himself that the war is just, and will thank God for the better sleep he enjoys after this process of grotesque self-deception.” – Mark Twain, The Mysterious Stranger, 1910.
