Unexpected Perpetrators in Iraq

In light of the exploding sectarian violence in Iraq, it’s worth remembering what the UK Times reported in January of 2005:

Death Squads to be Deployed by US Against Iraq Militants

THE Pentagon is considering forming hit squads of Kurdish and Shia fighters to target leaders of the Iraqi insurgency…

The thrust of the Pentagon proposal in Iraq, according to Newsweek, is to…direct US special forces teams to advise, support and train Kurdish Peshmerga fighters and Shia militiamen to target leaders of the Sunni insurgency.

Such covert operations have traditionally been run by the CIA at arm’s length from the administration in power, giving US officials the ability to deny knowledge of it.

Which begs the question, does the following sound like one of those US-trained hit squads?

21 Shiites Gunned Down in Front of Families

Sunni gunmen stormed two Shiite homes in Diyala province overnight and slaughtered 21 men in front of their families…

Almost sounds like the Pentagon is inciting a civil war so it has an excuse to stay in Iraq. But why would the Pentagon want to keep a war going in Iraq?

Billions Wasted In Iraq

The United States has spent more than a quarter of a trillion dollars during its three years in Iraq, and more than $50 billion of it has gone to private contractors hired to guard bases, drive trucks, feed and shelter the troops and rebuild the country.

It is dangerous work, but much of the $50 billion, which is more than the annual budget of the Department of Homeland Security, has been handed out to companies in Iraq with little or no oversight.

Somebody and their friends is getting very rich. When enough people catch on, they’ll close up shop in Iraq…and start another war somewhere else. And we’ll pay them to do it.
