Iraq: We’re Here to Stay!

There’s a lot of speculation about when US Troops will leave Iraq, but let’s not kid ourselves. Smart folks know history repeats itself over and again and round and round—nothing new under the sun.

So, what does history tell us? Are US troops still in Kosovo? Vietnam? Korea? Germany? Japan?

Yes, yes, yes. It’s a big game of RISK, and we have to have an army on every country. Right now, we only have troops in these 135 countries. We still have to cover that last 30% of the map to win!

Digging in for the Long Haul

While Republican and Democratic legislators spew withdrawal plans and end games, instead of watching their mouths, try watching their greedy hands…palms accepting large chunks of cash from your pocket and mine, then passing it on to filthy rich defense contractors like KBR.

As this article from Mother Jones reports, “the United States has been digging in for the long haul.”

Truth be told, the Pentagon is building over a dozen enduring bases (the Pentagon favors “enduring” over “permanent.”)

Included in these are four super-bases that will house tens of thousands of soldiers.

These super-bases already have Subways, Burger Kings, and Hertz car rentals. The al-Asad base is so extensive there’s two bus routes inside, plus a cinema, coffee shop, pool hall…

And let’s not forget the $592-million Biggest Embassy Anywhere Ever.

New US Embassy in Baghdad The new 21-building US Embassy complex being constructed in Baghdad will cover 104 acres. That’s about the size of Vatican City, which is its own country. In contrast, America’s largest existing embassy is the 10-acre, five-building embassy in Beijing.

The new embassy will have its own water, electricity, and sewage treatment plants, a swimming pool, tons of recreation facilities, a staff of at least 1,500—all surrounded by a 15-foot-thick stone wall to keep the chaos we created out.

To quote retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Karen Kwiatkowski, now an outspoken critic of the war, “We’re pouring concrete. We’re building little fiefdoms with security, moats, and walls…Eighty percent of Iraqis will grouse, but they have no political power. We’ll stay whether they want us to or not.”

Next roll of the dice…shall we put a base on Iran or Venezuela?

Next roll of the dice… my bet is on Iran. I would have said North Korea, but they already have nukes.
104 acres of embassy space, does it include an oil field as well?

My money is on Iran, too. The right wingnuts are definitely beating the war drums for it: LA Times Editorial.

“THE question puzzles and enrages a city: how is it that the Americans cannot keep the electricity running in Baghdad for more than a couple of hours a day, yet still manage to build themselves the biggest embassy on Earth? “

  5. Joe says:

Yeah, I wonder if most people in Baghdad wouldn’t accept having Saddam back in power if it got their electricity on.

  6. [...] Translation: lucky contractors are already at work on four military superbases and the largest embassy on the planet. “I want the enemy to understand that this is a tough task, but they can’t run us out of the Middle East — that they can’t intimidate America,” he said. “They think they can. They think it’s just a matter of time before America grows weary and leaves, abandons the people of Iraq, for example. And that’s not going to happen.” [...]

  7. [...] Tell them that, despite their plans to stay, we won’t allow them to keep us in Iraq forever. [...]
