LIFE in 1980

A few days ago in the comments of a blog about Iran, my mother-in-law said her picture was in an issue of LIFE magazine with Ayatollah Khomeini on the cover.

My wife found the magazine. It was the January, 1980 issue. Here’s some things I learned from browsing LIFE in 1980:

LIFE magazine, Jan. 1980 On the inside of the cover, I discover that Cheryl Tiegs was the spokesperson for Olympus (nondigital) cameras.

Cheryl says, “Once I get going, I can talk about the Olympus OM-10 all day…would you like to see some of my photographs now?” Trick question?

Moving on to the McDonald’s advertisement on page 11, I discover in the small print at the bottom that a Quarter Pounder only weighs a quarter pound BEFORE COOKING.

Page 77: The deforestation of the Rain Forest in Brazil is ramping up for the decade (making room to grow all those McQuarter Pounders.)

Page 100: A favorite painting, Frederic Church’s The Icebergs, is found and sold at auction for $2.5 million.

The painting had been lost for 100 years.

Page 107: War and famine are killing millions of children in Cambodia.

Page 19: Mikhail Baryshnikov (referred to as Misha throughout the article…) is the hottest thing to hit Manhattan since Jackie O.

Misha walks his dogs in the park, has James Cagney over for Thanksgiving dinner, and is regarded as the greatest dancer in the world (a throne pop culture handed to Michael Jackson a couple years later…)

And on page 41, while the Space Shuttle Columbia is being readied for it’s maiden launch, my mother-in-law is pictured lifting a 40-foot aluminum beam of the type that will be used for construction in space.

Viva la Eighties!

  1. If anyone trys to mess with you, just show them that picture and tell them your mom can kick their ass.

  2. Joe says:

    HahhahhAHhahhAhaa….good idea!

  3. Jodi says:

LOL!! And she would probably do it, a few years ago at least. She has mellowed some since the 80’s. Unfortunately, I did not inherit her “mean streak”, so if Joe gets into trouble, he his on his own! ;)

  4. Berta says:

Hey Joe: Now you are really on to good stuff. Ha. Can you believe I couldn’t remember which Magazine it was in! (laugh) I was in many newspapers with some of the new and wonderful innovations back then. Spinoffs from space exploration. One was the Moon Walker… (I have pictures made with it) and the spinoff’s of that was being used in new and better ways of helping people who could not walk to be able to go up and down steps and do things they could not otherwise do. I have no idea what the outcome of that was BUT I do appreciate NASA and all the research and developments for space and the SPINOFFS that we use today and the average “JOE” so to speak doesn’t even know that NASA ingenuity was to be thanked for it. Heart Monitors, tennis shoes, cookware, etc. Too tired to think tonight.
Hey Joe, how about Ana and sleeping in such a position as Jodi has on her Blog. I love that BABY! I love Tyler and William too and they love me because I helped them make their room look good. Kids are precious!
    Love Ya,
    Berta

  5. Joe says:

THANK YOU for helping the boys clean up their rooms!!!! (I can’t add enough exclamation marks to that sentence.) And yes, it’s hard to believe Ana can touch her nose with her toe…that’s a rare talent only a few gold-medal gymnasts share. (If you haven’t seen this, click here.)

Looking forward to seeing you over the holiday next week.
    -Joe

  6. I saw Frederic Church’s The Icebergs, in a Dallas museum.

Nearly dropped me to my knees.

It is HUGE, wallsize, and hugely beautiful.
