Pumpkin Chitlins

On Halloween Eve, we each decorated a pumpkin, including Ana. We squished the seeds out of the pumpkin guts and baked them in butter and salt…mmmm! Pumpkin Chitlins! Really feels like autumn now.

Today I looked up the history of Halloween. It’s a wonder we still celebrate it, because back in the eighth century, Pope Gregory III moved All Saints Day from May 13 to November 1, to try to convert Halloween into a Christian holiday. This same tactic had been successful in reframing the winter solstice celebration (swallowed up by Christmas…) and the spring equinox (wiped out by Easter, except for those pesky pagan fertility idols: you know, EGGS and BUNNIES…)

Now that Halloween’s such a cash cow for retail America, I think it’s here to stay. And I, for one, am thankful that the autumn equinox lives on in spirit (pun intended), because the Pope’s idea was to have everybody dress like their favorite saint. Nothing against voguing religious paragons, but William, Tyler, and Ana think dressing like a Clone Warrior or a Flower Fairy is a lot more fun!
